The four companies, Taiyo Nippon Sanso Corporation, MOL Techno-Trade, Ltd., SESO inc, and MOTENA-Sea, Ltd. (90% subsidiary of MOL Techno-Trade, Ltd.) were selected at this time by the Tokyo Metropolitan Government and the Tokyo Environmental Public Service Corporation to participate in the “The Subsidy Project for New Energy Technology Development in Tokyo” with the proposal titled “Establishment of an Offshore Hydrogen Supply Chain for the Introduction of Electric Propulsion Sightseeing Ships Using Hydrogen Fuel (hereinafter referred to as the ‘project’).”
News Release (PDF)
Hydrogen is a resource that we can produce ourselves, making it one of the most effective resources for local production and consumption.
Considering Japan’s geographical characteristics, we believe that establishing hydrogen production technology utilizing seawater will provide an opportunity to realize the potential of domestic hydrogen production in the future from the perspective of an energy BCP (Business Continuity Plan).
In this project, we will establish an offshore hydrogen supply chain, incorporating offshore hydrogen production using seawater (on-site hydrogen station on a barge), and delivering hydrogen to hydrogen-fueled ships, aiming to mitigate GHG emissions and achieve an energy BCP in Tokyo.
The outline of the project is as follows.
(1) Project period: December 2023 to December 2026 (three years)
(2) Project details
(i) Safety assessments, site selection, and the designing of detailed plans with the aim of constructing an on-site hydrogen station on a barge and conducting hydrogen supply experiments to a hydrogen-fueled ship.
(ii) Study and demonstrate measures to promote the use of hydrogen-fueled ships in Tokyo
The hydrogen-fueled ship envisioned for this project is the “HANARIA,” a hydrogen/biofuel hybrid electric propulsion sightseeing ship being constructed by MOTENA-Sea, Ltd.
